Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 8 slices thick-cut bread, slightly stale
  • 2 tbsp butter, for cooking
  • Maple syrup and powdered sugar, for serving

Instructions

  1. 1Whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt together in a wide, shallow dish.
  2. 2Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt a bit of the butter.
  3. 3Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, letting it soak for about 10 seconds per side so the custard reaches the center without turning the bread soggy.
  4. 4Cook the soaked bread in the buttered skillet until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side.
  5. 5Repeat with the remaining bread, adding more butter to the pan as needed.
  6. 6Serve hot, dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with maple syrup.
