Ingredients

  • 2 refrigerated pie crusts
  • 6 cups peeled, sliced apples
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg, beaten, for brushing

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 400°F and fit one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish.
  2. 2Toss the sliced apples with the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in a large bowl.
  3. 3Pour the apple mixture into the crust and dot the top with the butter pieces.
  4. 4Cover with the second crust, trim and crimp the edges, and cut a few slits in the top to vent steam.
  5. 5Brush the top crust with the beaten egg.
  6. 6Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling through the vents.
  7. 7Cool for at least 2 hours before slicing so the filling can set.
