Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- 1 lb ground beef or lamb
- 2 onions, finely chopped, divided
- 1 tsp cumin
- 2 cups plain yogurt
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup split yellow peas or lentils, cooked (for sauce)
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 tbsp dried mint
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- 1Knead flour, egg, salt, and water into a firm dough; rest 30 minutes and roll thin, cutting into squares.
- 2Mix ground meat with half the chopped onions, cumin, salt, and pepper for the filling.
- 3Place a spoonful of filling on each dough square and fold into small pouches, pinching the top closed.
- 4Steam the mantu in a greased steamer basket for 20-25 minutes until the dough is cooked through.
- 5Simmer the remaining onions and tomatoes with the cooked split peas into a thin tomato-lentil sauce.
- 6Whisk yogurt with garlic and salt.
- 7Plate the steamed mantu topped with the tomato-lentil sauce, garlic yogurt, and dried mint.
