Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 500g cottage cheese or fresh curd cheese
- 1 egg (for filling)
- 1/2 cup sour cream, plus more for topping
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- 1Make the dough by combining flour, egg, oil, warm water, and a pinch of salt, kneading until smooth and elastic; rest covered for 30 minutes.
- 2Meanwhile, mix the cottage cheese with the egg, sour cream, and a pinch of salt to make the filling.
- 3Roll the dough out very thin on a floured cloth until almost translucent.
- 4Spread the cheese filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border.
- 5Roll the dough up tightly like a jelly roll using the cloth to help guide it, then pinch the ends to seal.
- 6For boiled štrukli, cut the roll into segments and simmer in salted water for 15-20 minutes; for baked štrukli, place the whole roll in a buttered baking dish, pour over melted butter and cream, and bake at 190C (375F) for 35-40 minutes.
- 7Once cooked, cut into portions if not already done.
- 8Serve warm, drizzled with extra sour cream and melted butter, as a savory main or side dish.
