Ingredients
- 1 lb bucatini or ziti pasta
- 3 tbsp butter, divided
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan, divided
- 1 egg white, beaten
- 1 1/2 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (14 oz) can crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup red wine
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 4 tbsp butter (for béchamel)
- 4 tbsp flour
- 3 cups warm milk
- 2 egg yolks
Instructions
- 1Boil pasta until just shy of al dente, drain, and toss with 1 tablespoon butter, a quarter cup parmesan, and the egg white.
- 2Brown the ground beef with onion and garlic, then stir in tomatoes, wine, cinnamon, and cloves; simmer 20 minutes.
- 3Make the béchamel by melting butter, whisking in flour, then gradually adding warm milk until thickened; whisk in egg yolks off heat.
- 4Spread half the pasta in a buttered baking dish, top with the meat sauce, then the remaining pasta.
- 5Pour the béchamel over the top and sprinkle with remaining parmesan.
- 6Bake at 375°F for 40-45 minutes until golden and set.
- 7Rest 15 minutes before cutting into squares.
