Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup sugar, plus more for coating
- 2 eggs
- 4 tbsp melted butter, plus more for brushing
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup ground walnuts or cinnamon sugar, for coating
Instructions
- 1Dissolve yeast and a pinch of sugar in warm milk and let sit 10 minutes until foamy.
- 2Mix in flour, remaining sugar, eggs, melted butter, and salt, and knead into a smooth, elastic dough.
- 3Let the dough rise 1 hour until doubled.
- 4Roll the dough into long ropes and wind each rope spiral-fashion around a floured wooden cylindrical spit.
- 5Roll each wrapped spit in sugar to coat, then cook over hot coals or under a broiler, turning constantly, until golden and caramelized.
- 6Brush with melted butter while hot and roll in ground walnuts or cinnamon sugar.
- 7Slide off the spit and let cool slightly before serving.
