Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 6 tbsp softened butter
  • 2 cups ground poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/3 cup sugar (for filling)
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 2 tbsp chopped walnuts
  • 1 egg, for egg wash

Instructions

  1. 1Dissolve yeast in warm milk with a pinch of sugar and let sit 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. 2Combine flour, sugar, eggs, softened butter, and the yeast mixture into a soft dough; knead until smooth and let rise 1 hour.
  3. 3Simmer ground poppy seeds with honey and sugar for 10 minutes, then stir in raisins and walnuts; cool slightly.
  4. 4Roll the dough into a large rectangle and spread the poppy seed filling evenly over it.
  5. 5Roll up tightly from the long edge into a log and place seam-side down on a baking sheet.
  6. 6Brush with beaten egg and let rest 15 minutes.
  7. 7Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  8. 8Cool completely before slicing.
